A green river canyon in the forest near Mocoa

Mocoa, Putumayo

Where the Andes meet the Amazon.

Mocoa is a small town in southern Colombia, where the mountains descend into the rainforest. Rivers, waterfalls, birdsong, and afternoon rain are part of everyday life here.

Mocoa, Putumayo

Green, wet and alive.

Putumayo is a place of steep green hills and abundant water. The land around Mocoa is warm, lush, and often rainy. On the hillside where the retreats take place, mornings begin with birds and evenings with frogs and crickets.

Water

Waterfalls around every corner.

The rivers around Mocoa have carved canyons and waterfalls into the forest. Fin del Mundo is among the best known; Hornoyaco is another important place in the region. When conditions allow, days outside ceremony may include walks, swims, and time by the water.

Food from the land

Fruit from the trees, food from the land.

Meals draw on local produce and the food traditions of the region: cacao, pineapple, plantain, fresh juices, river fish, and wild chickens. Shared food is part of getting to know a place, not just a break between activities.

Culture

A land of rich cultures and much music.

Putumayo is home to Indigenous peoples including the Kamëntšá, Inga, Siona, and Cofán, each with their own histories and traditions. The taitas who lead these retreats are Kamëntšá. Their work with yagé is inseparable from the people, relationships, and knowledge of the region.

Jungle life

Beautiful, wild, and not always convenient.

The jungle does not run on a timetable. Rain can change plans. Trails get muddy. Insects are part of the landscape, and internet or electricity may not always be reliable. You'll be looked after, but this is a real place rather than a sealed-off resort.

Min shares practical expectations and a packing guide before travel. A flexible attitude and a sense of humor both help.
